Tequila Fit for a King - C&I Magazine

Photograpy: Código 1530 Tequila

We’d wager tequila is as much a part of Western culture as whiskey. And the King of Country himself agrees. George Strait has put his name behind Código 1530 tequila, a recent entrant to the domestic spirits market that positions itself as one of the finest, most discerning tequilas founded in tradition and history.

The name is taken from the codes and customs — los códigos— of tequila production and the Jerusalem cross on the 1530 coat of arms of Jalisco state — tequila’s birthplace. Instead of alcohol yeast, Código 1530 uses yeast from a family bakery in Amatitán — Código 1530’s home. The spirit is then aged in French white oak Napa Valley cabernet barrels. That’s not all that distinguishes Código 1530 from other high-end tequilas.

Although the brand offers the standard aging styles of blanco, reposado, and añejo, the tequila operation also offers a pink-hued rosa and its Origen (an extra añejo aged for six years), giving the latter characteristics usually found in elegantly aged whiskeys and cognacs. The blanco tequila offers drinkers the full flavor of the blue agave —herbaceous with peppery touches — while the rosa carries a soft caramel aroma smooth enough on the palate for those new to tequila. So whether you’re an aficionado or a novice, Código 1530 has something you can reach for. After all, it’s fit for a king.
